Grandpa Jones On The Road Grandpa never owned a bus. He traveled in cars in the early years, then later began to use campers and motor homes. For all the grief and trouble and expense those old campers and motor homes gave him he could have probably owned a couple of nice buses. When I went to work for him in 1983 he had just bought I nice 33 foot Holiday Rambler motor home. One summer we began having trouble with it breaking fan belts. We couldn't go 500 miles without a fan belt breaking. Instead of taking it to the shop we'd leave Nashville with a half dozen fan belts on hand! When one would break we'd pull to the side of the road. Of course Pa's famous temper would always show itself and the stubborn person he was, he wouldn't let any one of us change the belt......he'd always change it himself! He'd crawl underneath that motor home and bang up his knuckles and cuss but always manage to get the belt changed. One night at the Grand Ole Opry we were in the wings waiting to go on and Harold Weekly, the late Opry announcer and drummer, told Grandpa he'd heard we'd been breaking lots of fan belts lately. Grandpa looked at Harold and in that high pitched nasal voice said, "Yeah, I'm gettin so fast at changin em' I can change em' with the engine a runnin!" |
