"ALTERNATIVE COUNTRY MUSIC" On the subject of alternative country music; the first thing is to describe alternative to what, and in today's music world, alternative to the Nashville pop machine is the definition. Hard to say where the term came from but it's probably been around in one form or another since back in the days when Gram Parson's started injected country steel and more into his rock based music, this being the time Urban Cowboy was hot. It has come today to describe everything from country rock to hard core country like that of Dale Watson, Heather Myles, Don Walser and so many others who refuse to fit into the Nashville formula du jour. As for what type of music is too country, you should say "too country for country radio", and that would include at least 99% of the performers I play on TwangCast. The definition from a great book I have called "Modern Twang" - an alternative country music guide and directory: Umbrella term for a wide array of performers form the late 1960s to the present who, generally working outside the Nashville country mainstream, have reinterpreted and enhanced traditional country music styles and themes by incorporating a variety of modern musical and non musical influences.
